System Performance Modelling

System performance modelling is the process of using a mathematical approximation of a computer system to simulate how a range of system configurations cope with different user and system loads. This is far cheaper than typical performance testing as the system configurations can be tested effectively without the financial and time requirements of actually building the systems physically.

Generally, a system performance modelling process involves monitoring servers whilst low level user transactions are executed against the system. Information relating to the correlation of the server counters with transaction response times is collected when monitoring the system and fed into a mathematical modelling tool. The system specifications that are to be tested are also inputted into the modelling tool and the data is run to predict the level of performance that is to be expected from the system.

Once the data has been processed, a range of models are created in order to demonstrate how efficiently the system would run under each of the different hypothetical system loads. These results can then be used by the end user for capacity planning, bottleneck analysis and “what if” analysis, which will enable them to run the optimum configuration for their servers or systems.

In layman’s terms, system performance modelling means that a company or network manager can make decisions about how to set their systems up.

In practice, the Information Technology industry rarely uses modelling, but it is more often applied in educational settings, where the theory behind the computing is studied in more detail, and perhaps the college or university does not have the funds to purchase the hardware and software needed to test things physically. Quite often, the responsibility for modelling is removed from the business altogether, as external IT companies take on the task of finding the optimum solution for the business as part of the package offered to the business.
